About your team / Ko te tīma

Reporting to the Manager Petroleum and Geothermal, you will part of small team based over the North Island.

The Petroleum and Geothermal team is made up of qualified and experienced inspectors who work to prevent catastrophic harm. Recently, we welcomed a new team member and due to recent restructuring within this specialised area, we now have another exciting opportunity available. We are capable of educating and challenging duty holders on process safety and steps to reduce the potential for a major accident. The team are a vital part of WorkSafe, the mahi you do is responsible for a range of assessment, inspection, advisory and enforcement related activities to ensure organisations comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) and sector relevant regulation. No two days will be the same for you.

About the role / Ō te tūranga

As a Specialist Health & Safety Inspector, you have the opportunity to influence, facilitate and guide the future of health and safety within your targeted sectors. Our inspectors ensure organisations are effectively managing the health and safety of their workplaces by: 

  • building strong, positive working relationships within industries  
  • engaging, educating and where necessary, enforcing legislation 
  • undertaking a range of advisory, assessment, compliance, and enforcement-related activities  

What You'll Do/ Ko tōu ake mahi

  • Engage with operators and stakeholders
  • Responsible for operators within your portfolio and carry out facility inspections to meet the annual operational plan
  • Respond to notified incidents, perform initial and follow-up enquiries and review root cause analysis reports
  • Review and process regulation specific notifications
  • You will run industry workshops and engage with the petroleum and geothermal sectors
  • Undertake safety case assessments
  • Use enforcement and persuasive interventions to secure ongoing improvements
  • Educate, influence and improve the standards of the industry
  • Develop internal stakeholder relationships

What You'll Bring / Ko ngā pukenga ōu

  • significant experience in a senior technical or management position within a within a Petroleum or Geothermal operation
  • knowledge of the applicable health and safety requirements, standards, and legislation within the industry
  • operational experience in a regulatory role would be advantageous, or experience interpreting and applying legislation
  • Technical skills/background in any the following areas:
    • Well Integrity / Well operations
    • Risk Management / Operational Safety Management Systems
    • Electrical and Control Systems / Functional Safety / Cyber Security
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills including use of judgement to make sound recommendations based on available information, particularly within a technical and/or legal context
  • effective relationship skills so you can encourage and support positive developments or take resolute regulatory action on areas of non-compliance 
  • team skills to engage and interact with colleagues, share information and ideas 
  • excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to communicate information, concepts and arguments effectively 
  • the ability to effectively communicate at both operational and the most senior levels within an organisation 
  • the ability to remain calm and level-headed under pressure or when responding to emergency situations 
  • a current full/clean driver's licence is essential and a willingness for occasional travel

Salary range / Awhe utu

As part of our remuneration framework the full salary range for the position is from $152,865 to $201,493, and our expected starting base salary for the right person is from $152,865 to $169,220.  Note: KiwiSaver/SSRSS employer contribution is additional too/on top of your base salary.
